Markkleeberg (dpa) - After the closure of two mining lakes near Leipzig, a decision should be made by Pentecost whether they will be released again.

Until then, experts should present an assessment of the danger, said the spokesman for the mining rehabilitation company LMBV, Uwe Steinhuber.

The Störmthaler and Markkleeberger See were completely closed from March to the end of May after cracks in the embankment of a connecting canal were found.

The 850-meter-long canal leads through tipping grounds.

The LMBV began work to avert danger.

Sheet piling at both ends of the canal should ensure safety at the lakes.

The barriers on the Störmthal side of the canal have already been erected.

The lake is four meters higher than the Markkleeberger See.

Construction work has also been underway at the other end of the canal since last week.

When the sheet piling is secure, the lakes should be cleared for swimming and boating.

It is clear to all those involved that there is a "high public usage pressure", said Steinhuber.

It is still unclear how and when the affected sewer can be rehabilitated.

It will probably be a few years before excursion boats can sail through the canal and a lock that opened in 2013.
