International calls to contain the escalation in occupied Jerusalem have continued with the continuation of the Israeli attacks on the people of the city for the second consecutive night, and Palestine has requested, in consultation with Jordan and Qatar, to hold a session at the ministerial level of the Arab League instead of delegates next Tuesday, and an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will be held on the same day. While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described Israel as a state of terror, and called on the world to take action to stop its brutal attacks.

In a letter from the Permanent Delegate of Palestine to the Arab League on Saturday, she requested the General Secretariat to amend the request for an extraordinary session to be at the ministerial level, to be held by default next Tuesday.

In a message to the General Secretariat of the Arab League, Qatar expressed its support for the Palestinian proposal to amend the request for an extraordinary session of the Arab League to be at the ministerial level, to discuss Arab and international action to confront the brutal Israeli crimes and attacks on the lives, sanctities and property of the Palestinian people in occupied Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, discussed in a phone call Saturday evening with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas the latest developments in the situation in Palestine.

Abbas briefed the Emir of Qatar on developments, especially the attacks of the occupation forces on worshipers in the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the arbitrary measures in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

The Emir of Qatar affirmed his country's firm and supportive stance for the brotherly Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate national rights.

The Emir of Qatar also received a phone call from the head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, during which he reviewed what the Palestinian people suffer from the violations committed by the occupation forces and their attacks on worshipers in the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Intense moves

In the context of Palestinian moves to stop the Israeli attacks in occupied Jerusalem, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki said that work is underway to invite both the UN Security Council and the Human Rights Council to discuss the Israeli escalation in the city.

The Palestinian minister indicated that an emergency meeting would be held by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation next Tuesday to discuss the Israeli attacks.

In turn, Jordan stressed that Israel, as the occupying power, bears the responsibility to protect the rights of Palestinians in their homes. This came in a statement by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry after a meeting between Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs of Jordan and his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki.

The two ministers' statement emphasized that Jordan and Palestine warn that deporting Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood from their homes is a war crime and a violation of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Convention and the Hague Convention.

For its part, the Arab Parliamentary Union condemned the attacks of the occupation authorities and settlers on the city of Jerusalem and its holy sites.

'State of terror'

For his part, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described Israel on Saturday evening as a terrorist state that practices brutal and immoral attacks on Jerusalem, "our first kiss and the holy city of the three religions."

In a speech he delivered in Istanbul on Saturday evening, the Turkish president renewed his country's stand on the side of Jerusalemites and Muslims of Palestine, calling on international organizations to stop the injustice against Jerusalem and the attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Erdogan said that everyone indirectly supported Israel's attacks on Al-Aqsa through silence or not showing a respectable position, a partner in the injustice inflicted on Jerusalem.

American efforts

Meanwhile, Axios quoted US and Israeli officials as saying that US State Department officials spoke to their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts Friday night, asking them to calm the situation in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.

The website said that State Department spokesman Ned Price confirmed that Foreign Ministry officials have been in contact with senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders, urging them to cooperate to de-escalate tensions and end the violence.

They also called on all parties to exercise restraint, to refrain from provocative actions and speeches, and to preserve the current historical situation on the Holy Mosque in word and deed.

According to Axios, Price stressed that leaders must condemn all acts of violence, and that the security services ensure the safety of all Jerusalem residents, and that the perpetrators are held accountable.

In the American context, Senator Bernie Sanders called on the US administration to stand strongly against the violence of Israeli extremists who have alliances with the government.

In a tweet, Sanders asked his country to be clear about the refusal to evacuate Palestinian families from East Jerusalem.

In the same context, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren said in a tweet on Twitter that the forced displacement of Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrah is abhorrent and unacceptable.

She called on her country's administration to make it clear to the Israeli government that these evictions are illegal, and they must stop immediately.

Democratic member of the Senate, Alexandria Cortez, declared her solidarity with the Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah, and demanded an end to their eviction from their homes, describing what was happening as an inhumane matter, and demanding Washington protect the rights of the Palestinians.

For his part, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy called on all parties to exercise restraint, and considered that the evacuation of the Palestinian population is unjustified and must stop.

A succession of international responses

In the most recent reaction, the International Quartet of the Middle East called on the Israeli authorities to exercise restraint and to avoid measures that would escalate the situation during this period of the Islamic holy days.

A statement by the European Union, Russia, the United States and the United Nations stated that the committee is closely monitoring the situation in East Jerusalem, including in the Old City and Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

The delegates of the Committee expressed their deep concern about the daily clashes and violence in East Jerusalem, in particular the clashes at Al-Haram Al-Sharif.

The International Quartet also called on all parties to adhere to and respect the status quo in the holy places, and renewed their commitment to the two-state solution.

The statement expressed grave concern about the possibility of evacuating the homes of Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.

Committee delegates expressed their opposition to unilateral measures that would only escalate tension, and expressed their concern over what they described as the provocative statements of some political groups, the launching of rockets, the resumption of incendiary balloons from Gaza towards Israel, and the attacks on Palestinian agricultural lands in the West Bank.

The United Nations had earlier warned of forced evictions in Jerusalem, saying that they might amount to "war crimes."

In the latest Arab reaction, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry called on the international community to put pressure on the Israeli government to stop its efforts to displace the Palestinians, and called on Israel to stop the measures to change the Arab and religious identity and the legal status of Jerusalem.

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry considered that the recent Israeli measures undermine regional and international efforts to achieve security and peace in the region, and reduce the chances of resuming peace negotiations.

As for the Libyan Foreign Ministry, it said in a statement, "We call on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards protecting the holy sites in the occupied Palestinian territories."

The Tunisian Foreign Ministry also submitted a request to the Security Council to hold a session next Monday, to discuss the escalation of the occupation forces in Jerusalem.

In Yemen, the political office of the Houthi group called on all Arab and Islamic peoples to denounce the Israeli crimes, and affirmed its principled position on the Palestinian cause and its full support for the Palestinians.

There have also been condemnations of the Israeli attacks since Friday, from most Arab countries.
