Helmstedt (dpa / lni) - Four people were seriously injured in a collision of several vehicles near Helmstedt.
The accident occurred early Sunday morning on the B244 near the Helmstedt West motorway junction (Helmstedt district), as the police announced.
Accordingly, four cars were initially driving one behind the other when the drivers of the two rear vehicles started an overtaking maneuver.
According to the police, the two vehicles collided and hit a large traffic sign, landed on the roof and wedged themselves together.
The four inmates were able to get out of their cars, but were seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
The other two vehicles remained in the lane, the four occupants were not injured.
The damage to property is estimated at at least 80,000 euros.
The police assume an illegal street race.
All eight participants are said to have known each other.
