Flensburg (dpa / lno) - The handball players of the SG Flensburg-Handewitt remain in the race for the German championship.

With the 32:24 (13:13) home win over HSG Wetzlar, the team of coach Maik Machulla temporarily overtook front runners THW Kiel on Saturday, who can counter on Sunday.

The best throwers of the evening were Hampus Wanne and Marius Steinhauser from Flensburg and Lenny Rubin from Wetzlar, each with eight goals.

The game in the Flensburger Arena almost didn't even kick off because an SG player and a person close to the team tested positive for the corona virus during the routine PCR check on Friday.

Further examinations in both of those affected gave negative results, so that the encounter could take place.

Flensburg started well, but couldn't pull away.

The first two-goal lead at 11: 9 (22nd minute), which the left wing Hampus Wanne scored with a backhand throw, gave no security either.

The game remained contested until the hosts took the 25:21 lead (47th).
