Dresden (dpa / sn) - In Saxony, pedestrian crossings with zebra crossings can in future be created without a certain amount of cars and pedestrians in this area.

According to the Ministry of Transport in Dresden, the threshold was lifted on Sunday, also to make walking more attractive.

Especially in 30 km / h zones, for example in front of schools, daycare centers or in the area of local transport stops, safety for the comparatively weaker road users can be improved.

"The interests of pedestrians must be considered by the planners in the cities and municipalities from the start," said Minister Martin Dulig (SPD).

A pedestrian-friendly infrastructure should provide an incentive to leave the car behind, especially on shorter routes.

According to the ministry, almost a quarter of all trips in the Free State are made on foot.

So far, crossings can only be created if pedestrians are to be given priority, otherwise they will not be able to cross the street safely.

The establishment of zebra crossings can now be checked regardless of the number of people walking per peak hour.

The decision is generally made on a case-by-case basis in coordination with the police and road construction authorities.
