The table penultimate conceded a 1: 4 (0: 2) home defeat against SC Freiburg.
Nils Petersen (18th minute), Ermedin Demirovic (20th), Vincenzo Grifo (90th + 3) and Jonathan Schmid (90th + 5) scored the Freiburg goals.
Sebastian Andersson (49th) provided the connection goal, Ondrej Duda (58th) missed a penalty kick and with it the chance of the actually deserved draw.
1. FC Köln, which had previously won twice under the new coach Friedhelm Funkel, is about to be relegated to the Bundesliga for the seventh time.
Cologne need two wins in the last two games at Hertha BSC and against relegated Schalke 04 in order to have realistic chances of staying up.
Freiburg is ninth in the table after the third last match day.
