Bremerhaven (dpa / lni) - The Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven from the German Ice Hockey League have qualified for the Champions League for the first time by winning the Eisbären Berlin championship.

The club from Bremerhaven, which has played in the DEL since 2016, is the fourth and last team from Germany to qualify for the coming season.

The Adler Mannheim and Meister Berlin had previously qualified as the respective winners of their preliminary round groups and the EHC Red Bull Munich.

Bremerhaven finished second in the north group just like Munich in the south, but scored fewer points.

If runner-up Wolfsburg had prevailed against Berlin in the playoff final, Lower Saxony would have been in the Champions League instead of Bremerhaven.

"We are sure that we will show together with our cooperation partners and our fans in the upcoming games that Bremerhaven has to be counted among the ice hockey strongholds of our country", said managing director Alfred Prey.
