Berlin (dpa / bb) - In the Berlin prisons, inmates completed almost 3.5 million working hours in the Corona year 2020.

That was about 5.7 percent less than in 2019, said the Senate Department for Justice at the request of the German Press Agency.

Strict hygiene rules and protection against infection apply to the workplaces behind bars and the places for qualification.

In the prisons, for example, inmates worked in rotating teams.

For example, they are employed in the car workshop, bakery, glazing, bookbinding, printing, gardening, upholstery and painting shop.

It was said that there were only selective restrictions in the workplaces.

However, at the beginning of the pandemic, the educational and professional qualifications of prisoners had to be temporarily suspended by external forces.

The area was largely maintained.

However, as in the past, the products made by prisoners could not be sold on visitor days, so that income fell.

Service contracts, for example for the auto repair shop, could not be accepted either, said a spokesman.

Even if working hours had to be shortened due to Corona or employment was temporarily lost, this was not at the expense of the prisoners, emphasized the justice administration.

The usual working hours and the basic wage for each remuneration level were also remunerated.

According to the judiciary, prisoners receive 10.66 euros per day at the lowest level, and 17.77 euros per day at the highest level with a working time of 7.4 hours.

In the kitchens, the hygiene rules are particularly strict, it said.

Prisoners employed there would be housed separately in order to minimize contacts within the institution as far as possible.

Presence teams had been formed for both the staff and the prisoners and they changed regularly.
