Berlin (dpa) - The writer Deniz Utlu was awarded the Alfred Döblin Prize 2021 in Berlin on Saturday.

"Deniz Utlu builds up the story of a father-son relationship in layers of memory ... In an immediately touching and humorous language, he lets us participate in the conflicts, celebrations and everyday life of a family", the jury explained its decision.

"Utlu opens up a geography of remembrance for German literature that extends from Hanover all the way to Turkey, to the Syrian border."

The award is endowed with 15,000 euros.

Deniz Utlu, born in Hanover in 1983, lives in Berlin.

In 2014 he published his first novel “Die Unhalten”.

In 2019 his second novel, “Towards Tomorrow”, was published.

Most recently, he received the Literature Prize of the State Capital of Hanover in 2019.

The Alfred Döblin Prize, donated by Günter Grass in 1979 and awarded every two years for an unfinished prose manuscript, is organized by the Academy of Arts and the Literary Colloquium Berlin.
