Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate FDP chairman Volker Wissing opened the state party congress with sharp criticism of the federal government's corona policy and a commitment to the citizens' rights of freedom granted by the Basic Law.

"For us it is unacceptable when a Chancellor describes basic rights as privileges," he said on Saturday at the digital meeting.

The federal government acted “haphazardly” in the pandemic.

The corona crisis revealed many problems that existed in Germany.

With a view to the federal election in September, Wissing, who is also Secretary General of the Federal FDP, underlined the Liberals' goal of having an important say in the formation of the next federal government.

Wissing made it clear where the red line is for the Free Democrats: "With the Free Democrats there will be no tax increases." Climate protection also plays an important role for the FDP. Unlike other parties, however, the FDP relies on the "agility and speed" of the social market economy to solve the problems in its policy. Strengthening the social market economy is also the recipe for reducing the debt accumulated due to the corona pandemic. He strongly condemned political demands for the revocation of patent protection. With a view to the Mainz-based corona vaccine manufacturer Biontech, Wissing said: "With us there will be no weakening of property protection - not even the intellectual one".

The focus of the party congress is the election of the new state executive.

Wissing had declared before the party congress that he wanted to run for this office again.

Due to technical problems with the voting system, the online meeting was temporarily interrupted shortly after it started.
