Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The tourism regions in Saxony-Anhalt are preparing for the new season with mixed feelings in view of the corona pandemic.

Day tourists, meanwhile, are increasingly drawn to nature for hiking.

With original evidence such as stamping for the Harz hiking pin, they are on a voyage of discovery, as a survey by the German press agency revealed.

Tourism associations appealed to visitors to continue to strictly adhere to the distance and hygiene rules and to pay attention to the environment.

Hopes for vacation in Saxony-Anhalt are linked to the state government's announcement that it will allow relaxation of the corona rules in counties with relatively low infection rates, for example in outdoor restaurants.

According to the State Statistical Office, with the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, the number of tourists arriving fell by around 50 percent compared to the previous year.

According to preliminary data, around 80 percent fewer arrivals were recorded in February 2021 than in the previous year, as a spokeswoman said.
