The Greens in Baden-Württemberg have initiated party exclusion proceedings against the Mayor of Tübingen, Boris Palmer.

At the state party conference, 161 delegates voted for an expulsion procedure, 44 against and 8 abstained.

Palmer had previously caused outrage on Facebook with statements about former national soccer player Dennis Aogo.

The Green leadership in Baden-Württemberg had pushed for Palmer to be excluded from the party.

"There has been another derailment," said Green Country Leader Oliver Hildenbrand on Saturday at the state party conference in Stuttgart.

Palmer's statement about Aogo was "racist and repulsive".

The Tübingen mayor ensures with "staged taboo breaks" for a polarization of the public debate.

Therefore, the party congress must decide whether to initiate an exclusion procedure.

The party congress then voted by a large majority to accept a corresponding motion in the Palmer case, which was actually made too late, to a vote because of urgency.

Almost 20 members of the Greens, including five from the Tübingen district association, had declared with a view to Palmer: "The measure is full."

According to the Greens' statutes, the exclusion can take place “if the member intentionally violates the statutes or regulations of the party and has thereby caused serious damage”. First of all, the district arbitration commission would be responsible for such a procedure. If the committee makes a decision, an appeal can be lodged with the regional and federal arbitration tribunals.

Currently there is a discussion with Facebook users, in which Palmer took up a quote attributed to Aogo on Friday and commented, obviously ironically: "Aogo is a bad racist." As a justification, he referred to an unverified Facebook comment in which it had been alleged without any evidence that Aogo had used the N-word for himself. The term N-Wort is used today to describe a racist term used in Germany for black people.
