Freiburg / Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The police have started the “motorcycle” weekend in Baden-Württemberg.

600 police officers are taking a closer look at conspicuous motorcycles, as a police spokesman announced on Saturday.

For example, controls were carried out in Elzach near Freiburg.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, a total of around 100 control points will be set up and a total of 30 preventive actions will be carried out.

A police spokesman said it was about educating and sensitizing motorcyclists.

The aim is to increase safety on the roads and reduce the number of accidents.

The officers also control the speed and volume.

At the checkpoints of the police headquarters in Aalen, Offenburg and Konstanz there were no complaints until Saturday noon, as the Interior Ministry in Stuttgart announced on request.

Due to the weather, only a few people were on the road with their motorcycles at the start of the campaign on Friday.

It was similar on Saturday morning, said the ministry spokesman.

Last year the police registered almost 4,700 accidents involving a motorcycle in the southwest.

This was 4.3 percent less than in 2019. 71 motorcyclists were killed last year, compared to 94 in 2019.
