Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - For the first time this year, the NRW state parliament is offering a new prize for young artists.

The "Art Prize of the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia", endowed with 15,000 euros, should be awarded every year in future, said State Parliament President André Kuper of the German Press Agency.

"Art is an essential part of our democracy," he said.

The art prize is intended to honor art in a free democracy.

For the 75th birthday of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the price should also create something lasting beyond the corona pollution, said Kuper.

In this time, which is not easy for artists, the award is also “a special sign of solidarity”.

The call for applications runs online from June 1st to September 30th.

The prize is to be awarded for the first time on January 17, 2022. Artists from the fields of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography or new media can take part.

The condition is that they live, work or have completed their artistic training in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The degree should not be more than three years ago.

The jury of the art award is made up of high-ranking members.

In addition to the art professor Bogomir Ecker, she includes the general secretary of the Kunststiftung NRW, Andrea Firmenich, and the rector of the Städel School in Frankfurt, Professor Yasmil Raymond.

NRW has produced great artists from Joseph Beuys to Gerhard Richter to Rosemarie Trockel and Katharina Fritsch, said Kuper.

The country is home to many art venues of international standing.

The state parliament itself is also a place of art.

In the current year alone, Parliament has bought nine works of art, seven of them by artists.

The state parliament collection now comprises almost 800 works, including works by Ewald Mataré, Günther Uecker, Otto Piene, Gotthard Graubner and Jörg Immendorff.
