Berlin (dpa) - SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil has asked the Greens to exclude the Mayor of Tübingen Boris Palmer from the party after controversial statements.

Palmer has long been a repeat offender with his failures, Klingbeil told the German Press Agency on Saturday.

"His behavior cannot remain without consequences from Ms. Baerbock and the green party leadership."

The announcement to discuss exclusion from the party should "now be followed by deeds".

Palmer had caused a stir on Facebook with statements about the former national soccer player Dennis Aogo. The Green politician repeated a racist and obscene term from a quote attributed to Aogo and commented, obviously ironically: "Aogo is a bad racist." As a justification, he referred to an unverified Facebook comment in which it was claimed without evidence that Aogo had used the N-word for himself. This term is used today to describe a racist term used in Germany for black people.

Klingbeil emphasized: "Racism is never irony."

The Greens have a racism problem with Palmer.

Far too often the derailments of the mayor of Tübingen were swept under the carpet in the past.

«The tactic of bumbling no longer works.

It's about attitude, ”emphasized the SPD General Secretary.

The Greens' candidate for chancellor, Annalena Baerbock, said on Saturday morning that Palmer had lost political support from the Greens and that an exclusion procedure was being discussed.
