Osnabrück (dpa / lni) - Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Olaf Lies has spoken out against an increase in the CO2 price.

«Climate protection must not become a social issue.

More expensive heating oil, gasoline or electricity are not only an issue at the lower end of the income spectrum.

That goes deep into the middle class, ”said the SPD politician of the“ Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung ”(Saturday).

"We have to be careful that we do not divide society even further with the necessary additional efforts on climate protection."

Instead, he campaigned for a climate solos analogous to the solidarity surcharge to cope with the costs of German unity.

"A climate solos is a socially just solution: strong shoulders have to carry more than weak shoulders when it comes to climate protection," said Lies.

The Soli is a suitable source of income to finance the additional efforts in climate protection that are necessary after the judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court this week.

In December 2019, the federal government agreed on a CO2 price of 25 euros per ton, which has made fossil heating and fuels more expensive since the beginning of the current year.

It is planned that it will rise further to 55 euros by 2025.

It is considered to be one of the most important instruments for advancing climate protection.

Last week the Federal Constitutional Court obliged the legislature to regulate the reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions for the period after 2030 in more detail.
