Dortmund (dpa) - Borussia Dortmund has set another exclamation mark in the race for the Champions League places and drew new courage for the cup final.

Five days before the showdown in Berlin against RB Leipzig, the Revierclub achieved a hard-fought 3-2 (1-0) victory in the Bundesliga duel with the same opponent even without striker Erling Haaland.

Thanks to the goals of Marco Reus (7th) and Jadon Sancho (51./87.) In the empty Signal Iduna Park, BVB celebrated their fifth league victory in a row and moved up to fourth place for at least one day.

In contrast, the second in the table from Leipzig remained without a win for the seventh time in a row against Dortmund despite the two goals from Lukas Klostermann (63rd) and Dani Olmo (77th).

The renewed loss of Haaland, who suffered a thigh injury in the 2-0 game on the previous Bundesliga matchday in Wolfsburg and was already missing in the cup semi-final against Kiel, did not seem to impress Borussia.

After a moment of shock when BVB goalkeeper Marwin Hitz cleared Hee Chan Hwang (3rd) in dire need, Borussia got off to a great start.

The leadership gave me the first chance.

A remarkable combination with a final pass from Haaland substitute Thorgan Hazard successfully completed Reus from close range.

With his fifth goal in the past eight competitive games, he confirmed his rising form.

However, compared to the narrow cup win in Bremen (2: 1 nV), the visiting team, which had changed to four positions, was not deterred by this.

With a lot of running work and a quick build-up game, she contributed to a competitive game that was well worth seeing.

With all the ball possession, the Leipzig team struggled with creating chances to score.

As in the last time, the BVB defense proved to be solid and held against it with great commitment.

In this phase, BVB relied on the counterattack - and was closer to 2-0 than the guests until the break.

But Hazard (32nd) failed from an acute angle to RB keeper Peter Gulacsi.

Four minutes later, after a pass from Reus, the England international Sancho made his way towards the Leipziger Tor, but hesitated too long with the conclusion and in the end only hit the outside netting.

Right at the beginning of the second half, Roman Bürki, who was substituted for injured BVB goalkeeper Hitz (knee), took center stage when he was there for a shot by Marcel Sabitzer. But as in the first half, BVB struck ice cold. After a pass from Raphael Guerreiro, Sancho got into position with a short solo and hit from the left into the far corner for a 2-0 lead.

And again the Leipzigers stayed on the trigger.

With great fighting spirit, they tried to make the connection.

Klostermann headed a corner from Emil Forsberg into the Dortmund gate.

That brought the guests back into the game - and Borussia shook.

They pushed for a balance with power and were rewarded by Olmo.

But in a hard-fought final phase, BVB had the happier end for themselves thanks to Sancho's second goal.
