Liverpool advanced with a goal scored by Senegalese star Sadio Mane in the 31st minute, then Thiago Alcantara added the team's second goal in the 90th minute.

Liverpool raised its tally to 57 points to climb to sixth place, and there remains a postponed match against Manchester United to be held next Thursday, along with its matches in the remaining three rounds of the competition, while Southampton's balance stuck at 37 points in 16th place.

Liverpool snatched sixth place from Tottenham, who stuck at 56 points after losing to Leeds United 1-3 earlier Saturday.

The win, with a loss for Tottenham, has boosted the Premier League holders' hopes of qualifying for the European League if they fail to enter the semi-finals this season.
