Tübingen (dpa / lsw) - The University of Tübingen is sticking to its attempts with crows despite allegations from animal rights activists.

The research on brain activities of crows is "still part of the basic research," said a spokeswoman on Friday.

The studies were officially approved.

The regional council of Tübingen as the supervisory authority confirmed this.

The "Spiegel" had reported that the university had carried out experiments in the past with insufficient permits.

Animal rights activists called for an end to the experiments with surgical interventions on the brains of the animals after it became known that between 2011 and 2015 crows from a bird protection center of the Nabu nature conservation association were also used for this purpose.

According to Nabu, the association had provided the researchers with a total of eight dead and seven live carrion crows.

But nothing was known about the type of experiments.

A spokeswoman for the University of Tübingen emphasized that the experiments were also approved from the start with regard to the crows from the bird protection center.

"These attempts have been approved by us," said a spokesman for the Tübingen regional council on Friday.

There were "no misconduct" from the authorities.
