Wiesbaden / Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) - 40 years after the murder of Heinz Herbert Karry, the Hessian liberals have recognized the FDP politician as a “role model” and a pioneer in economic policy.
"Out of deep conviction, Heinz Herbert Karry advocated middle-class politics and a market economy," said FDP state chairwoman Bettina Stark-Watzinger in Wiesbaden on Friday.
He made contacts in China early on and recognized how important a good infrastructure in general and Frankfurt Airport in particular are for the economic development of Hesse.
"That's why he was not deterred by violent protests and campaigned for the construction of the West Runway."
The then 61-year-old Hessian Minister of Economic Affairs was shot in his sleep through the open window on the morning of May 11, 1981 in his house in Frankfurt-Seckbach.
The murder of the FDP politician shocked Hesse.
After the crime, the left-wing radical «Revolutionary Cells» confessed to the attack, but the perpetrators could not be identified.
The Free Democrats see their political work in the tradition of Karry, said Stark-Watzinger.
"Heinz Herbert Karry has always fought passionately for freedom and democracy."
The circumstances of his death are still a reminder "that these ideals must be defended again and again and that extremism and political murders must never be accepted".
