Dresden / Freiberg (dpa / sn) - Saxony's science is participating with ideas in the federal and state competition for new large research centers in the regions affected by the coal phase-out.

The Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, according to a statement on Friday, sees itself as having a special responsibility to support regional structural change because of its close ties to the raw material and energy region and the Central German area.

Three contributions “concern important social challenges such as climate protection and the sustainable use of resources” and take up regional strengths and particularities, as Rector Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht said. In association with the Technical Universities of Chemnitz and Dresden, the Freiberg researchers propose a major research center for future energies that investigates innovative approaches to energy generation, storage and use.

The results should create a basis for a sustainable energy supply for the economy, transport and society in the region.

One initiative aims to develop technologies for the climate-friendly supply of water, energy and food, and a European research center for space resources is to develop the conditions for the establishment of manned stations on celestial bodies such as the moon and Mars.

Top researchers at TU Dresden (TUD) apply in conjunction with non-university research institutions and companies with the concept of a Saxonian Institute of Technology (SIT).

It is intended to shape digital innovations for the future - for the areas of health care, nutrition, mobility and energy.

Two new large research centers are to be built in Saxony by 2023, with a total of up to 3,000 new jobs in the two regions.

According to TUD, three projects will each receive the conception contract in July;

a final decision will be made in the second quarter of 2022.

The federal and state governments are providing up to 170 million euros annually for each center.
