A new covid wave hits India hard.
The World Health Organization has clarified that a quarter of all reported covid-19 deaths in the world currently come from the country.
Exhausted doctors on site testify that the supply of medicine, oxygen and trained staff is dwindling at a furious pace.
- India has quite large needs and has demanded a lot of critical medical equipment, says Roger Gustafsson, project manager at the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) to TT.
200 oxygen concentrators
Sweden is now heeding the Indian authorities' appeal for international support.
MSB has decided to send 200 oxygen concentrators to help the country's population in the current crisis.
The equipment is available on the market and MSB has the opportunity to arrange such within the state framework agreements that exist, says Gustafsson.
The government is financing
The EU's civil protection mechanism ERCC has confirmed that Indian authorities will accept the offer from Sweden.
The delivery time is estimated to be between two and four weeks from the time the order is placed, which has already been done, according to Gustafsson.
- All parties are aware that it will take some time and it is still considered relevant.
The aim is to "strengthen India's ability to provide healthcare to the large number of people who have contracted covid-19 in the country", MSB writes in a press release.
The Government Offices has approved MSB's application for SEK 2 million to be granted for financing purchases and transport.
