Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is making ten million euros available until 2024 to equip 100 train stations with modern video technology.

The aim is to "significantly increase security for commuters," said the Ministry of Transport on Friday.

The federal police are to be given live access to some extent.

«Germany must become a railroad country again.

For this we need train stations that are good places.

Modern video technology helps us that passengers feel even safer, ”said Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU).

In a report to the state parliament it was said that the video cameras should "have a deterrent effect with regard to vandalism and other crimes and serve to investigate crime".

The stations that will be equipped with new cameras include the main stations in Oberhausen, Gütersloh and Siegen as well as several locations in Cologne, including Cologne-West, Worringen and Nippes.

According to the report to the state parliament, the costs are between 80,000 and 300,000 euros per site.
