Berlin (dpa / bb) - Three little capybaras have explored their enclosure in Berlin Zoo for the first time.

On Thursday, mother Marly and father Augustin took the rabbit-sized Capybara babies through the “animal flat share” that they share with vicunas, said a zoo spokeswoman.

Since Friday - just in time for father Augustin's fifth birthday - the young capybaras can also be seen by visitors.

"For us at Zoo Berlin, these are the first capybara young in six years," said zoo and zoo director Andreas Knieriem.

On April 19, the three capybaras were born after a gestation period of just under five months.

For mother Marly it is the first offspring.

After birth, the rodents are well developed and nibble on grass, and the suckling period ends after only two months, according to the zoo.

Capybaras are also called capybaras, which means "master of the grass" because they mainly feed on grasses and aquatic plants.
