Alt Tellin / Schwerin (dpa) - In the almost completely burned down pig breeding facility Alt Tellin (Western Pomerania-Greifswald), about ten percent fewer animals died than previously reported.

The Schwerin Ministry of Agriculture and the plant operator - Landwirtschaftliche Ferkelzucht Deutschland Holding (LFD) - announced the corrected figures on Friday.

Accordingly, when the fire broke out on April 30, there were slightly more than 51,000 sows and piglets in the piglet rearing facility, of which 49,771 pigs died in the fire.

These numbers were based on an exact evaluation of all protocols, said LFD spokesman Ralf Breke-Bramkamp.

Shortly after the fire, the LFD only spoke of a total of 7,000 sows and 50,000 piglets in Alt Tellin, of which only 1,300 pigs could be saved.

This number was the capacity at the location, said Beke-Bramkamp.

The actual number could fluctuate by several thousand animals, since young animals are constantly being born in such facilities or large piglets are transported to other fatteners.

The cause of the fire has not yet been clarified.

According to the public prosecutor's office, there is suspicion of negligent arson, whereby a technical defect is also possible.

A first result on the cause should be available at the end of May.

After the major fire, a debate broke out about the closure of large industrial animal breeding facilities, mainly for fire safety reasons.
