The Lyon University Press (PUL) will publish in September the master's thesis by Samuel Paty, a history and geography professor beheaded last October after showing caricatures of Muhammad in class to college students.

, this work, supported in 1995, when Mr. Paty was a student at the universities of Lyon 2 and Lyon 3, is interested in the use of the color black in society. French through literary and pictorial sources.

"Culture in the face of obscurantism"

At the initiative of this project, Christophe Capuano wanted to pay tribute to his friend he met on the benches of the university "by giving him the floor, by allowing him to have the last word, that of culture in the face of obscurantism" .

Now a lecturer in contemporary history at Lyon 2, M. Capuano believes that this research thesis "embodies this culture and the critical spirit" that Samuel Paty defended, indicating moreover that he wanted this publication for the family of the deceased professor. , “I know they are very sensitive to it”.

In the summary of the work already announced at online booksellers, the PUL indicate for their part "to have decided to publish this text in order to make heard the voice of an apprentice historian endowed with a strong literary culture, a at the same time fine and daring reflection, finally of a great sensitivity to the images ”.

The book will be the subject of a preface by Christophe Capuano and historian Olivier Faure, to discuss teacher training, and will be accompanied by a foreword written by Nathalie Dompnier and Eric Carpano, respectively president and president. from Lyon 2 and Lyon 3.

The publication scheduled for September 23, will take place a few weeks before the first anniversary of the assassination of Samuel Paty, perpetrated on October 16.
