Erfurt (dpa / th) - Thuringia's trade with Russia has plummeted in recent years.

In the period between 2013 and 2019 alone, the exchange of goods fell by almost 34 percent.

However, the decline was not solely due to the EU's economic sanctions against Russia, which had harmed both sides, said State Secretary for Economic Affairs Valentina Kerst on Friday in the Erfurt state parliament.

The oil price and the economic development in Russia also had an influence.

Thuringia wants to concentrate heavily on economic cooperation with the Russian republic of Tatarstan, said Kerst.

It was pushed a few years ago, among other things, by a trip by Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) with a business and science delegation.

Foreign trade with Russia, which has a special tradition in East Germany due to the shared Ostlock past, fell between 2013 and 2019 by a total of 6.9 billion or 39.6 percent to 10.6 billion euros.
