Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate state government is today dealing with easing the corona lockdown for tourism and gastronomy.

A cabinet meeting is about possible opening steps for the Whitsun holidays if the number of new corona infections is at a low level in a region.

Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) cited low-contact vacations in a holiday apartment or on a campsite with its own sanitary facility as examples.

This year, Pentecost Sunday is on May 23rd, in Rhineland-Palatinate the school holidays run from May 25th to June 2nd.

Some federal states recently announced openings for tourism.

Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, for example, want to allow tourism again soon in combination with rapid tests and strict rules, provided that the seven-day incidence (number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants) in the holiday regions is stable below 100.

Other federal states, however, are still waiting.
