Even firmly riveted or welded place-name signs would disappear, warned Vedat Ilgay, division manager at traffic sign manufacturer Fritz Lange GmbH in Springe in the Hanover region.
The company produces 120,000 standard traffic signs a year, as well as large signs for motorways and around 3,000 place name signs a year.
Around 1.6 million traffic signs are changed nationwide every year.
There are a total of 16 manufacturers of traffic signs in Germany.
