Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - Positions in nursing professions remain vacant in Saarland, sometimes for months.

As the responsible regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency announced on Friday, it took an average of 149 days in 2020 in Saarland before a position in health and nursing could be filled.

In geriatric care, it was almost six months with an average of 174 days.

According to the information, the increasing need for nursing staff and especially skilled workers is related to demographic change, among other things.

At the same time, according to the figures from the Federal Agency, slightly more people were employed in both care areas last year than in 2019. The number of employees subject to social insurance in the health and nursing professions rose by 300 compared to the previous year to a total of 15,600 (plus 1.8 percent) in June 2020. The majority of the vast majority of female employees were accordingly skilled workers, the share of helpers was 12.7 percent.

In the care of the elderly, the number of employees in Saarland rose by 3.6 percent to 7,900 people in June 2020 compared to the previous year.

Almost half of the predominantly female employees were therefore skilled workers.
