Brake / Rendsburg (dpa / lno) - More than five years after the serious accident of the historic Rendsburg transporter ferry across the Kiel Canal, the modern successor vehicle is heading towards completion.

The head of the waterways and shipping office for the Kiel Canal, Detlef Wittmüß, got an idea of the status of the work on Friday at the production site in Brake in Lower Saxony.

"The ferry is in the final production," said Wittmüß the German press agency.

It should be operational by the end of summer.

It looks like the old one, but is equipped with modern technology.

The transporter bridge collided with a ship on January 8, 2016 in poor visibility.

A good year ago, the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation came to the conclusion that negligence on the part of the ferry operator as well as on the bridge of the freighter “Evert Prahm” led to the accident.

Two people were injured in the collision, one seriously.

The historic transporter bridge was so badly damaged that it had to be dismantled.

The commissioning of the new building was initially planned for mid-2020, but was delayed.

"Everything has been on schedule for months now," said Wittmuess.
