Wolgast (dpa / mv) - The construction of the bypass for Wolgast (Vorpommern-Greifswald), which has been planned for years, is getting closer.

As the Schwerin building ministry announced on Friday, the Federal Ministry of Transport has given construction approval and confirmed the financing.

"This is great news," said head of department Christian level.

Now the contracting of construction works can start and construction is expected to begin in August.

This project is very important for the holiday region around the island of Usedom.

The bypass should be 6.8 kilometers long and lead with a conspicuous bridge structure over the Peene to the island, which bypasses the bridge openings.

In future, traffic on the B111 is to lead south-east around Wolgast.

"The regular traffic jams in Wolgast, especially in the tourist high season, will be a thing of the past," said level.

Usedom has two connections: via Wolgast in the north and the Zecheriner bridge from the south.

The Wolgast bypass is expected to take five and a half years to build, i.e. probably until around the end of 2026.

According to the information, the planned bridle bridge is the first of its kind in Europe.

The costs are estimated at around 140 million euros, of which a good 133 million euros will be borne by the federal government.
