Erfurt (dpa / th) - According to Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund (Greens), Thuringia relies on hydrogen production solely with the help of renewable energies.

Only “green hydrogen” as an energy carrier for industry or as fuel for vehicles is a contribution to climate protection, said Siegesmund on Friday in the state parliament in Erfurt.

This presupposes that the Free State significantly increases the production of eco-energy.

So far, the production of hydrogen has been very energy-intensive.

“At present, the share of renewable energies in Thuringia's net electricity consumption is around 50 percent. So it takes more and not less renewable energies if we want to produce green hydrogen on site, ”said Siegesmund. The minister demanded that the federal government change the rules to make investments in hydrogen technology attractive. "The levy exemption under the Renewable Energy Sources Act must come urgently." The federal government announced this, but has not acted so far.

The CDU parliamentary group had demanded the state government's report on the Thuringian hydrogen strategy.

She made a number of demands such as closer cooperation with the neighbors Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt or the establishment of a Thuringian application center for hydrogen technologies.

The CDU application, which is not aimed solely at the production of green hydrogen, will continue to be discussed in the state parliament's environmental committee, among other things.

Other groups also described hydrogen as an important part of the energy transition.

According to Siegesmund, there are first test projects in Thuringia, such as a hydrogen train on a non-electrified railway line in the Schwarzatal in East Thuringia.

A needs analysis shows that hydrogen is an option in energy-intensive energy sectors such as glass, ceramic and steel production as well as in heavy-duty vehicles or buses and trains.
