Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - A 23-year-old car driver delivered a 40-minute night chase with the police until shortly before Leverkusen after a routine traffic control in Dortmund early on Friday morning.

Then he collided with a warning beacon at a construction site on the A1 and then with a truck.

Despite minor injuries, the man fled to a forest on foot, but was arrested shortly afterwards, the police said.

A helicopter was also used.

According to a pre-test, he was probably on drugs and his car was uninsured.

The man drove up to 160 kilometers per hour on the run, repeatedly disregarded red traffic lights and put other road users at risk with risky driving maneuvers. Attempts to slow down and stop the vehicle with multiple patrol cars had to be canceled for safety reasons, the report said.

The truck was damaged in the accident and lost so much diesel that the A1 had to be closed in both directions in front of the Leverkusen motorway junction.

Later, the lanes in the direction of Dortmund could be released again, the blockage in the direction of Cologne between Burscheid and the Leverkusen junction remained in place in the morning.

By running over debris, two police patrol cars were damaged, one of which was no longer ready to drive, the police said.
