Hanover (dpa / lni) - Before the commemoration of the Liberation Day on May 8, the SPD parliamentary group warned to be vigilant.

Even 76 years after the end of the war, the demons of human hatred, anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia are still in the world, said chairwoman Johanne Modder on Friday.

"Today, as then, all democrats must show a clear edge against the right, so that such crimes do not repeat themselves."

In many places in Lower Saxony, demonstrations and memorial events are planned for this Saturday.

In the corona pandemic in particular, conspiracy theories and right-wing extremist thinking are becoming more and more common and unvarnished, Modder noted.

"It is our democratic duty to fight this hatred consistently so that words do not become deeds."

The group leader also referred to current wars and violence.

"Whether in Yemen, Syria or Eastern Ukraine - people around the world have to leave their destroyed homeland and experience immeasurable suffering every day."
