Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The education and science union (GEW) in Rhineland-Palatinate has spoken out in favor of declaring May 8 a public holiday.

On May 8, 1945, "Germany and Europe were liberated from war, fascism and Nazi barbarism," said GEW state chairman Klaus-Peter Hammer on Friday in Mainz.

That is why the GEW, together with all other unions of the DGB, support the demand to make May 8th as a public holiday a day against racism, exclusion and discrimination in every form.

The regional association of the left is also calling for a public holiday on May 8th.

"What is present as a history day in the Netherlands, France, Italy, what is present as a history day in Russia, Ukraine, Great Britain and the USA must not be forgotten in the country of the perpetrators," said the left-wing member of the Rhineland-Palatinate parliament, Katrin Werner.

The historical review must at the same time be a reminder to the present: "Society must never again look on while right-wing and right-wing extremist structures emerge, especially in state bodies such as the police, the military and secret services."
