Cologne (dpa) - The ongoing lockdown has brought the stationary fashion trade in Germany, according to the Textile Trade Association (BTE), "a historic drop in sales".

According to initial projections by the BTE, boutiques, fashion chains and clothing stores lost around 40 to 50 percent of their sales in the first four months of this year compared to 2020, the trade association reported on Friday in Cologne.

Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, the minus is even around 60 percent.

BTE spokesman Axel Augustin reported that the retail sector made around four billion euros less in sales in the first four months than in the same period last year.

The shops were also closed from mid-March to the end of April in 2020.

Compared to the pre-crisis year 2019, the slump in sales even amounts to six billion euros.

"The short opening phase in March, the shopping by appointment or Click & Collect could not even remotely compensate for the losses," said Augustin.

The growing quantities of goods are now also a major problem for the stationary fashion trade.

In addition to the previously unsold spring fashion, more and more summer goods are now waiting for buyers in the shops.

“The stationary fashion trade now needs substantial opening steps as quickly as possible,” demanded Augustin.

Otherwise, “thousands of fashion stores would close their doors forever and thus destroy tens of thousands of jobs”.
