  • Fresh money The president of Repsol before the 'Villarejo case': "Fainé and I are calm, we are not going to resign"

The former president of La Caixa Isidro Fainé has transferred to the president of Repsol, Antonio Brufau, the responsibility of hiring José Manuel Villarejo's company to investigate the operation of Sacyr and Pemex to take control of the oil company.

Fainé and Brufau have declared this Friday as defendants before the judge of the National Court that is investigating the Tandem case, focused on the retired commissioner's business.

The first has been Fainé, who has disassociated himself from spying on Sacyr and has held Repsol responsible for what had been done.

"I do not have the slightest knowledge of the actions that were carried out. I did not participate in the selection or in the hiring, or in the payment of the supplier, nor did I have the slightest idea of the company that Repsol had hired, or of who was Mr. Villarejo, much less if an active Police officer had been hired ", Fainé said before the judge, according to sources close to the former president of CaixaBank.

The two defendants have related their version of a key meeting for the investigation, in which they agreed that they would work together to try to obtain information about the operation on Repsol.

"Brufau informed me that Repsol had already contracted a commission, which was carried out by its director of corporate security, and he proposed that I share information about the pact," Fainé declared in reference to the agreement between Sacyr and the Mexican Pemex that they wanted to deactivate.

For his part, Brufau has argued before the judge who transferred Fainé that it would be good "for the corporate intelligence areas" of Repsol and La Caixa to share investigative tasks.

And that the matter would be handled by the security chiefs.

If Fainé has derived the responsibility of the hiring in Brufau, this has done it in his inferiors, alleging that such a decision did not reach the Presidency.

According to his version, he agreed that Sacyr had to be investigated, but then he ignored it.

According to sources present in the statement, during the interrogation he was made to see that the first questions he had stated that it was a critical situation for Repsol, which was badly in line with that version that later he was not aware of what answer the company gave or what data was obtained that would serve to stop the operation, which finally did not go ahead.

According to Brufau, the then head of Repsol security, former commissioner Miguel Ángel Fernández Rancaño, never told him anything of interest on the matter.

"He never gave me reports or documents or spoke to me about conversations or personal information" of the president of Sacyr, Luis del Rivero, who today is present in the case as injured.
