Dresden (dpa / sn) - Despite current restrictions in the wake of the corona pandemic, the Center for Contemporary Art Ostrale is preparing its Biennale in 2021.

The 13th edition of the art exhibition, curated by an international team, should take place in Dresden from July 3rd to October 1st, the organizers announced on Friday.

The main location is the former canteen of the GDR combine Robotron, a decaying pavilion of the East Modern.

Under the title “Breathwende” 557 works of all genres by 138 artists from 34 countries will be shown - including Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Peru, Singapore and Togo.

They were selected from 1114 applications.

In the “Robotron canteen”, around 3500 square meters are available for the Biennale, said Ostrale boss Andrea Hilger. It will also be tested "for its suitability for a new life as a cultural site" in the city. As in 2019, there are also other exhibition venues such as the German Hygiene Museum and the Ostrale Center in the west of the city. According to the statements, the Biennale explores "at the gate of a new, post-pandemic era, how we live together with our fellow human beings, animals and our complex environment". Subsequently, presentations of a selection of the works of art in Budapest, Croatia and European Capital of Culture 2022 Kaunas (Lithuania) are planned under the title “Flowing Connections”.

The Ostrale is largely borne by the private sector and artists, but is funded by the EU and the city.

The art festival has been in question for years and has only taken place every two years since 2017.

It has no permanent domicile and is dependent on the temporary use of real estate.
