Madrid (dpa) - In view of the initial success of the vaccination campaigns, the Spanish booking system provider Amadeus IT is hoping for a certain recovery in flight bookings.

In March, the number of bookings and passengers increased again after the slump in air traffic, the company announced in Madrid.

"In terms of volume, this was the best month since February 2020," said Amadeus boss Luis Maroto.

There was another improvement in April.

Nevertheless, the numbers are still red in the first quarter due to the corona pandemic.

The company counted around 60 percent fewer flight bookings than a year earlier, when the pandemic had only hit air traffic in full in March.

The number of passengers fell by as much as 67 percent.

In January, the increase in the number of infections led to new travel restrictions, said Maroto.

According to the company, the bottom line was a loss of around 95 million euros after a profit of 118 million a year earlier.

In 2020 as a whole, Amadeus had suffered a loss of 505 million euros.

With a view to the further business development, the manager was cautious.

Amadeus is expecting a further recovery in business.

Combined with a renewed appetite for travel and the success of vaccination programs around the world, this should help Amadeus get through the crisis, he said.
