Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The water quality is “excellent” at 106 bathing spots in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Ministry of the Environment pointed this out on Friday with reference to values from last year.

However, it is still unclear whether the bathing areas will be accessible in summer due to the corona protective measures.

"It is to be hoped that bathing pleasure will not fall into the water in 2021," said Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser (CDU).

That depends on the development of Covid-19 - and how each individual deals with the associated requirements and measures.

In North Rhine-Westphalia there are 82 designated EU bathing waters with 108 bathing areas, where water quality tests are carried out regularly during the season.

106 of the 108 bathing spots had an excellent rating in 2020.

According to the ministry, the water quality of the bathing areas “Freibad Schwimmer” on Eiserbachsee in Simmerath and “Seaside Beach” on Essen's Baldeneysee were rated “good”.
