Berlin (dpa / bb) A 33-year-old who is said to have been involved in sexual assault on a young woman in a Berlin apartment has rejected the allegations.

He did not rape the woman, the defendant said on Thursday at the start of the trial in the capital's district court.

One of his roommates at the time brought the person concerned into the apartment.

According to the indictment, the woman was allegedly raped by eight men in a row in March 2020.

The 33-year-old said the woman was lying in bed in his room when he came home from a bar visit.

He asked her to leave the apartment.

She refused and offered him sex.

"I didn't want to," said the student.

A roommate went to the woman.

There were sexual acts.

"What I had heard was all amicable," said the defendant.

He lived in the apartment with four other men.

According to the indictment, the woman should have voluntarily gone into the apartment because she had an appointment with the owner.

Several men who are said to have already been in the apartment initially hid in the bathroom.

The alleged rapists had led the young woman into a room and one after the other exploited her hopeless situation.

In a first trial of the alleged assault, three 21 to 30-year-olds were sentenced to six and seven months' imprisonment for failure to provide assistance.

According to the judiciary, it was not possible to establish with certainty that the accused there participated in a joint rape.

The trial against the 33-year-old will continue on May 19.
