Bremen (dpa) - Werder Bremen has to accept a great personal damper in the fight to stay in the league.

Defender Ömer Toprak has suffered a setback in rehab training and threatens to be out for the rest of the season.

"There is no way he will be able to play against Leverkusen, and it is very questionable whether he will be able to play again this season," said Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt on Thursday.

Werder receives Leverkusen on Saturday (3.30 p.m. / Sky) in the Weserstadion.

The 31-year-old Toprak has been absent for four competitive games due to a calf injury. "Of course that's a setback because with him we had our most stable phase this season," said Kohfeldt. “But it's no use complaining now. We played a very good game against Leipzig even without Ömer, ”said Kohfeldt, referring to the unfortunate 2-1 defeat after extra time in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup.

The use of Marco Friedl and Jean-Manuel Mbom is still questionable.

"There is hope with them, but we have to wait and see," said Kohfeldt, who once again left his future in Bremen open.

“I'm only concentrating on one thing: keeping the class with Werder as quickly as possible.

We will discuss everything else after the season, ”said the 38-year-old, who is under criticism after seven league defeats in a row.

Because of the strong performance against Leipzig, those responsible expressed confidence in Kohfeldt despite the renewed defeat.
