Weißkeißel (dpa / sn) - The federal police in Weißkeißel (Görlitz district) were only able to stop a suspected cigarette smuggler with a nail belt placed across the street.

The 31-year-old tried to evade a control of his vehicle on Wednesday, as the federal police announced on Thursday.

First he ignored the stop sign of a joint patrol from customs and federal police on federal highway 115 in the direction of Rietschen, before he finally turned around and sped away at around 200 kilometers per hour in the direction of Weißkeißel.

When laying out the nail belt, a federal police officer had to jump to the side to save himself from a crash with the fugitive.

He drove on with a broken front wheel before he left the car at the entrance to Weißkeißel and continued his escape on foot.

When the officers finally arrested him, he reportedly resisted the arrest.

The federal police found 899 cartons of untaxed cigarettes in his vehicle.

In addition, it turned out that the license plates from the Görlitz district were forged.

At the request of the Görlitz public prosecutor's office, a judge ordered the suspect to be held in custody.
