Kiel (dpa) - The federal and state consumer protection ministers are looking at the issue of microplastics in food.

At their meeting, chaired by Schleswig-Holstein, it was initially about a federal report on the current state of research, said Consumer Protection Minister Claus Christian Claussen (CDU) of the dpa on Thursday.

Even if there are not yet any concrete indications of dangers: "The idea that one feeds on plastic, even if in tiny parts, is quite repugnant."

This current topic needs further research.

The European Union has taken the first steps against the spread of plastic waste and thus also microplastics.

Products made from single-use plastic, for which there are good alternatives, may no longer be sold in the EU from July 3, 2021.

For example, there will no longer be straws, cotton swabs, coffee mugs or plates made of plastic in stores in the future.

Other topics on the conference agenda include travel law, financial services and food waste.

A meeting between the ministers and the EU Commissioner for consumer protection, Didier Reynders, is planned for Friday morning.
