Alt Tellin / Stralsund (dpa) - The investigations into the cause of the fire in the large pig breeding facility Alt Tellin (Western Pomerania-Greifswald) are taking longer than previously planned.

As a spokesman for the Stralsund public prosecutor said on Thursday, the fire expert will not be able to present an initial result until the end of May at the earliest.

So far, the investigators had expected the expert's first assessments at the beginning of May.

According to previous investigations, there is still suspicion of negligent arson, said the spokesman.

A technical defect is also possible.

The large facility, which has been criticized by animal and environmentalists for years, in which, according to the operator, there were 7,000 sows and 50,000 piglets, was largely burned down on March 30th. More than 55,000 pigs perished in flames and smoke. According to the Animal Welfare Association, it was the worst stable fire in Germany for years. The fire brigades could not prevent the fire from spreading from stall to stall. Only about 1,300 animals were rescued. The biogas plant and the feeding towers were spared from the fire.

On behalf of the Agricultural Piglet Breeding Germany (LFD) as operator, a specialist company clears the ruins on the cordoned-off site.

Because synthetic and insulating materials were burned at the same time, most of the carcasses had to be disposed of as hazardous waste in an incinerator.

The disposal of the almost 2000 tons of dead animals took a good month.

State Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) has ordered a stop for further stall planning and the inspection of all large livestock stalls for fire protection.

How to proceed should be determined after the cause of the fire in Alt Tellin has been clarified.
