Figures from the National Board of Health and Welfare show that Jämtland, Gotland and Halland have the most midwives per woman of childbearing age.

Here, there are just over 500 midwives per 100,000 women of childbearing age.

Both Kalmar and Kronoberg end up at the bottom and bottom of the list, respectively, with 400 in Kalmar and 340 in Kronoberg County.

- Nothing exceptional has happened now, Region Kronoberg has long been plagued with a shortage of midwives, says Anna Seiborg Kidell, department chair, Vårdförbundet Kronoberg.

Invested in financial supplements

According to Anna Seiborg Kidell, the Health Care Association feels that the region has worked to recruit more midwives.

Among other things, they offer paid education and have invested in financial supplements, but that has not been enough.

In 2017, many midwives left due to the tough work environment, says Anna Seiborg Kidell.

She explains that the situation does not look like that anymore, but that the effects from 2017 remain and that Kronoberg still has an equally great need to employ more midwives.

A national problem

Vårdförbundet Kronoberg's side currently has no concrete proposals on how to recruit more midwives, more than the region has already tried.

Anna Seiberg Kidell explains that this is a national problem.

- The region has the rental staff they can, but companies also have difficulty finding midwives.

Anna Seiborg Kidell has a theory that you may not apply for the profession precisely because you know that the lack of midwives creates strenuous working conditions.
