On Thursday, the Hamburg district court sentenced a 24-year-old to four years' imprisonment for a knife attack in a parking lot.

The judges were convinced that he was guilty of attempted manslaughter in unity with dangerous bodily harm.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.

According to a court spokesman, the defendant paid the victim 10,000 euros in compensation for pain and suffering before the verdict.

The German had confessed to having stabbed his opponent with a knife at least eleven times in August 2020 in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant on Eiffestrasse.

This was critically injured.

The parents of the injured party had previously felt hindered by attempts by the defendant's sister to park.

The court is convinced that there was a tussle between the mother of the victim and the sister of the later attacker.

According to the court spokesman, the women pulled each other's hair - part of the sister's headscarf was torn off.

In addition, the victim's father hit the sister in the stomach.

Judge: the defendant is "completely crazy"

The couple's son and the defendant were both absent from the incident but met a few days later in the parking lot for a discussion.

The defendant stated in court that his aim was to prevent further aggression against his sister.

He only took the knife with him as a precaution for his own protection.

But it escalated.

The 24-year-old was originally charged with attempted murder in the district court.

But the court did not consider any murder criterion to be fulfilled.

The presiding judge said it was not a surprise attack because the situation in the parking lot swelled.

The accused was "completely crazy".

A psychiatric expert assumed an act of affect.

The culpability was considerably limited.

In its plea, the Hamburg public prosecutor's office called for five and a half years in prison for attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm. The attorneys for the accessory prosecution pleaded for five years and eight months. The defense found a significantly lower prison sentence to be appropriate. The chamber ultimately remained below the penalty required by the prosecution. Reasons were, among other things, that the accused was still so young, had shown remorse and had no criminal record.
