Berlin (dpa / bb) - Chickens were burned in a fire on the premises of the Dahlem domain in southwest Berlin.

According to the fire department, a 50 square meter stable went up in flames on Thursday evening.

Rare, endangered chicken breeds were bred there.

80 animals were rescued by employees before the fire brigade arrived, so they are housed in another stable together with ducks.

How many chickens died was initially unclear.

Around 50 emergency services extinguished the flames, as a spokesman announced.

The fire brigade was on site very quickly and was able to prevent the fire from spreading to historic buildings.

According to the domain's website, the former manor has a history of more than 800 years.

Today's foundation includes an open-air museum, organic farm and craft businesses.
