Münster (dpa / lnw) - The plants on the fields in North Rhine-Westphalia are only slowly gaining momentum after the cold April.

The rain of the last few days and the warmer temperatures next weekend should encourage the plants to grow, reported the Chamber of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia on Thursday in Münster.

"Overall, after three dry summers, it can continue to rain so that the plants can get enough water from the ground," said a spokeswoman.

The grain developed differently in the cold weather, but most of the areas looked good.

“Many plants have reddish leaf tips because of the cold.

Some varieties also react with yellow leaves. "

However, these symptoms would quickly go away in warm weather.

The rapeseed bloom has also been making slow progress so far.

In the case of sugar beets, too, growth did not get off the ground because of the cold.

According to the Chamber of Agriculture, corn sowing in North Rhine-Westphalia is as good as complete.

"Here too, the farmers are waiting for warmer weather so that growth can begin."

The German Weather Service expects significantly higher temperatures for the weekend: On Saturday it should be up to 18 degrees in NRW, on Sunday even up to 28 degrees.

There should be no more frost on Saturday night.
